Ghatothkach, released in 2008, is an animated original film based on the life of the character "Ghatothkacha" from the Sanskrit epic story "Mahabharata" written by Vyasa. The movie, directed by Singeetham Srinivas Rao and released in association with Sun Animatics, premiered in May 2008 at the Cannes film festival and features the adventures of Ghatotkacha, nicknames Ghattu, and his elephant companion Gajju. Ghattu, the son of Bheem and demon-woman Hidimba, has a natural strength and proficiency in the art in the magic, a trait that serves him well as the story leads Ghattu into the middle of his cousin's love triangle. Utilizing both 3-D and 2-D animation, producer Suryadevara Vinod said the movie is the first of its kind in India, and utilized over 30 different cameras in filming the movie. With song accompaniment and kid-friendly animations, the music, magic, and mythology are intended to captivate children and keep viewers interested in Ghatothkach.
