Gidget is a classic 1959 romantic comedy directed by Paul Wendkos. It is an adaptation of the 1957 novel Gidget, The Little Girl With Big Ideas by Frederick Kohner. During her summer break from high school, Southern California native Francis Lawrence (Sandra Dee), heads to the beach with her friends Mary Lou (Jo Morrow), Nan (Yvonne Craig) and Patti (Patti Kane), who are only interested in meeting cute surfers. Francis becomes fascinated by surfing itself, so she recruits the help of friend Betty Louise (Sue George) to teach her the sport. The boys in the surfer gang tell Francis that girls shouldn't surf, but she soon wins their respect due to her determination to learn. They accept her into their group as their little sister and give her the nickname "Gidget," a playful blend of "girl" and "midget." When Gidget discovers that she is starting to have romantic feelings for surfer Moondoggie (James Darren), she concocts a daring scheme to show him that she is more than just a little girl.moreless
