Girls in Chains is a 1943 film about a teacher at a girl's reformatory. Ruth Martin (Barbara Pepper) loses her teaching job due to her sister Helen's (Arline Judge) marriage to an infamous gangster. The gangster, Johnny Moon (Addison Randall), runs the city with his gang. After that, the only job she can find is teaching at a girl's reformatory school. There is no hope for these girls, who are kept in solitary confinement and forced to do work hard doing laundry. Ruth puts her heart into her job, with the goal of trying to prepare the students for the outside world. However she finds opposition from Johnny's operation, which doesn't care about the students, and are only interested in seeing that everyone stays in line. Ruth's attempts to improve the girl's lives are met with great resistance. When one of Johnny's girlfriends ends up at the school, convincing her to testify against Johnny may be the only way to save the girls and the city.moreless
