Maximus is a powerful general who is loved by the people, his army and the Emperor himself. After years of serving Rome on the battlefield, Maximus wishes to return home to his wife and son. But fate has a different plan for his life. His destiny becomes one of slavery where the arena is his battlefield, and he kills to entertain the mob. Maximus surrenders to the life handed to him by the gods and becomes a great gladiator. As fate intervenes once again, Maximus finds himself back in Rome. Stripped of his military status, he is known only as "The Spaniard." Once again, Maximus finds he must serve the wishes of his Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, and face an opponent who holds the dream of Rome in his hands.

Hagen: Good. Tomorrow, you can scream in seven languages.

      • Maximus: (awaiting their opponents in the Colosseum) has anyone here been in the army?
Soldier: Yes, I served with you at Vindobona.
Maximus: You can help me. Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together. Do you understand? If we stay together, we survive.

      • Commodus: Why doesn't the hero reveal himself and tell us all your real name? You do have a name.

      • Maximus: I knew a man who once said, " Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back."

      • Commodus: Lucius will stay with me now. And if his mother so much as looks at me in a manner that displeases me, he will die. If she decides to be noble and takes her own life, he will die. And as for you, you will love me as much as I loved you. You will provide me with an heir of pure blood, so that Commodus and his progeny will rule for 1,000 years. Am I not merciful?
