Go Tell It on the Mountain begins in 1935, when African-American man, Gabriel Grimes (Paul Winfield) runs away and becomes a Baptist preacher. However, Gabriel doesn't adhere to the commandments in the Old Testament; he cheats on his wife and has a child with his mistress, Esther (Alfre Woodard). Guilt-ridden from his own infidelity, and further troubled by the failings of his son, Gabriel decides to run away again. This time he goes to Harlem and starts over with a new wife and, eventually, two new sons. While there, Gabriel learns that his career as a preacher can't put food on the table. He becomes obsessed with his religion to the exclusion of everything else, including his family. Can Gabriel find faith where none has ever existed? This adaptation of James Baldwin's novel about an African-American family in the early twentieth century recounts the struggles and hardships of life in a white-dominated society.
