Godzilla 2000 is a 1999 film directed by Takao Okawara made one year after the American Godzilla film starring Matthew Broderick. In Godzilla 2000, Godzilla must battle a 60,000 year old UFO that discovers the secret to Godzilla's power. The film was a moderate success in Japan almost doubling its budget of $8,000,000. The film was then re-released in the United States where it flopped, solidifying the rest of the Millennium Godzilla films would be released straight to DVD. The American release redubbed the film with comedic subtitles like "Great Caesar's Ghost!" in order to lessen the seriousness of a film where a gigantic lizard is fighting a UFO. The film was met with mixed reviews leaning towards positive which made it become a staple of the Godzilla cannon from then on.
