Golden Door is a story of an early 20th century immigrant and the struggles he faces when he attempts to relocate to America. Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) is a widower, making ends meet as a farmer in Italy. Deciding he has nothing to lose, he packs up all of his earthly possessions, gathers his family and prepares to move to America. Before the exodus begins, Salvatore and his family meet Lucy Reed (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a British expatriate that is also looking to move to the United States. The group embarks on the ocean liner, hopeful of the promise of a new life in a new land. The trip itself is quite treacherous, due to storms, sickly passengers and mental fatigue. Before arriving in this new world, Lucy reveals that she would like to marry Salvatore, but assures him it is for convenience and not love. Despite having arrived in the "promised land," the would be immigrants are now faced with various mental and physical examinations, to determine whether they are worthy of entering the Golden Door.
