Gothic is a 1986 horror film directed by Ken Russel. The film is based off the actual story of the night that Mary Shelley came up with the idea for Frankenstein while staying at the Swiss villa of Lord Byron on the night of June 16th, 1816. The guests that night (along with Mary ((played by Natasha Richardson)) included the poet Percy Shelley, Mary's half sister Claire and Byron's personal physician Dr. John Polidori (played by Timothy Spall) who has a thing for leeches. Lord Byron (played by Gabriel Byrne) promises his guests a night full or horror stories. So he takes laudanum other hallucinogens and then tells his guests ghost stories as they explore the dark hallways of his home. The stories reveal personal horrors and madness and the night devolves into sexual fantasies and horrifying nightmares...The film becomes a fever dream of visuals and goes against the typical progressive plot structure found in most other movies. The film was actually shot entirely within the actual Byron estate.
