Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan takes a behind the scenes look at the recording process of the Grammy-nominated album "Gotta Serve Somebody." The film features gospel renditions of classic Dylan songs and candid discussion with music critics and Dylan contemporaries. The album and film feature songs from only the first two of the trilogy of albums birthed in Dylan's "Born Again" period between 1979 and 1981. Dylan wrote these songs with the intention for them to be performed by gospel choirs in resonating tabernacles. The album takes that intention and amplifies it with the talents of gospel stars, most notably perhaps on Shirley Caesar's version of the title track "Gotta Serve Somebody." With riveting performances by gospel greats like Dottie Peoples and Aaron Neville, archival footage, and interviews with Rolling Stone writer Alan Light among other music journalists, the film inspects Dylan's songwriting and the expressive creativity of a handful of gospel artists.moreless
