Grace of My Heart takes a look back at the late 1950s when the doo-wop sound dominated the radio, and New York City's Brill Building was center of the musical universe, the recording studio where young singers, songwriters and producers made rock and roll history. Denise Waverly (lleana Douglas) wins a talent contest with her sultry voice and scores a recording contract. After competing with dozens of other girl singers, she finds success as a songwriter collaborating with Howard Caszatt (Eric Stoltz). The duo also hit it off romantically and they marry. They compose a string of hits as the music scene changes to the surfer sound of the early 1960s to the psychedelic scene. Denise finds herself drawn to Jay Phillips (Matt Dillon), the troubled leader of a California group. She also yearns to return to singing and not just write them for others. Writer/director Allison Anders loosely based the story on the real-life experiences of Carole King, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and notorious producer Phil Spector.moreless
