Gran Torino is a 2008 drama from Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood who directs, produces, and stars in the film. Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski, a veteran of the Korean War who is spending his retirement as a curmudgeonly hermit, rarely venturing further into the world than the limits of his front porch. Walt worked for most of his life at a Ford factory, and one of his most valued possessions is his 1972 Gran Torino, which he keeps in perfect condition. He's lived in his home for many years, and he's watched what was once a working-class neighborhood populated by white families become dominated by poor Asian families. Asian gangs control much of the area, and the cynical outlook Walt developed during the war is only reinforced by his bleak surroundings. However, when he forms a begrudging friendship with the Hmong family next door, he begins a late-life journey of cultural understanding. Gran Torino was a huge critical and commercial success, winning many international film awards.moreless
