Grand Hotel is a 1932 drama directed by Edmund Golding. At the luxurious Grand Hotel in Berlin, different residents meet and connect. Otto Kringelein (Lionel Barrymore) has lived a boring life as an accountant, but now that he is dying of a terminal illness, he has decided to spend all his savings and live his last days in lush surroundings. He makes friends with Baron Felix von Geigern (John Barrymore), a man who is Otto's opposite in many ways. The baron has lived so decadently that he now uses his card playing talents and jewel thievery to earn a living wage. Grusinskaya (Greta Garbo), a beautiful and lonely Russian ballet star, is staying at the hotel and contemplating ending her life. When she meets the charming Felix, however, she starts to reconsider. Also at the hotel is Flaemmchen (Joan Crawford), a stenographer who aspires to become a great film actress. She tries to convince her unsavory boss, Preysing (Wallace Beery), that she has what it takes to be a star. As the different residents of the Grand Hotel become involved in intricate plots, the hotel becomes the scene of heartbreak and joy alike.moreless
