Grateful Dawg is a documentary about the musical friendship between David Grisman and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. The two met and began playing together on the bluegrass circuit in the 1960’s. When Garcia left to pursue a new project, the Dead, Grisman had “no time at all” for that music and the two lost touch. Years later, their friendship was rekindled in a chance encounter. The slowly started playing shows together, bringing their specific brand of rock infused bluegrass. The film features footage of many of those performances as well as extensive interviews with the duo, family, and friends. Though the film’s subject matter is naturally geared toward a viewer with an interest in Grisman and Garcia’s music, it’s an easily accessible story for everyone. Directed by Grisman’s daughter, Gillian, Grateful Dawg is truly a love latter to her father and his music.
