Gun the Man Down is a 1956 American western film directed by Andrew V. McLaglen and starring James Arness and Angie Dickinson. Three men rob a bank together, but when one of them is wounded, the other two turn against him. They kidnap his girlfriend and run away with their share of the loot. The wounded man is eventually captured by the police and sent to prison. Three years later he is released and decides he wants to get revenge on his old partners. He finds the two men and his girlfriend living in a small, deserted town. He decides that instead of killing them immediately, he will play a few games with them. Produced by John Wayne, Gun the Man Down is notable for being the first major role for actress Angie Dickinson. After starring in the film, John Wayne suggested Arness for the lead role in the hit television series Gunsmoke, which he would play for twenty years.
