Movie Summary

Director:
Todd Stephens
Released:
2004
Rating:
R
Two young misfits from Sandusky, Ohio, the goth teenage photographer Clive (played by Kett Turton), who is on the edge of coming out of the closet, and Gypsy, an obese twenty something (played by Sara Rue) who loves Stevie Nicks music and hates her dead end job at a local photo hut, decide to go to New York City. They are going to the city because they have heard of a Stevie Nicks themed karaoke show there called Night of a Thousand Stevies.' Their obsession with Stevie Nicks comes from the fact they both lost their mothers at a young age and sort of took on Nicks as a mental surrogate. On the way there they must escape from their painful pasts and learn how to discover their strengths and accept themselves for who they are. The film was directed by Todd Stephens and released in 2001. It also features the famous American actress Karen Black as Bambi LeBleau.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

They are tremendously appealing, and under Stephens' direction, Anson Scoville as an Amish runaway and Paulo Costanzo as a closeted gay college fraternity man are also memorable.

  • 40

The New York Times Dave Kehr

This is a tiny, vulnerable, rather treacly film at heart, one that would probably float away were it not for Ms. Rue's generous presence.

  • 40

    Variety Robert Koehler

Couldn't be less involving and more sentimentalized.
