Hail the Conquering Hero is a comedy/drama film centering around a man from a small town named Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith (Eddie Bracken). His father was a Marine who died in World War I, so his mother, Mrs. Truesmith (George Paine) assumes Woodrow will follow in his father's footsteps. Woodrow does join the Marine Corps, but is soon discharged because of chronic Hay Fever. Since he does not want to disappoint his mother, he lies to her, saying he is overseas fighting in World War II, when in reality he is working in a shipyard in San Diego. One day in a bar, Woodrow runs into Master Gunnery Sergeant Heppelfinger (William Demarest), a former Marine who served in World War I with Woodrow's father. Heppelfinger calls Mrs. Truesmith, telling her that Woodrow has been medically discharged so she does not have to worry about him and he can return home. When Woodrow steps off the train, the whole town is waiting for him, claiming he is their hero. What started as a simple lie turns into a big chain events.moreless
