Hamburger Hill

Movie Summary

Director:
John Irvin
Released:
1987
Rating:
R
Hamburger Hill is director John Irvin's 1987 war film that tells the story of the brutal and senseless Battle of Hamburger Hill in 1969. The film centers on a group of 14 soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division who were at the forefront of the battle for what was officially called Hill 937 in the A Shau Valley of Vietnam. The film introduces the men in the days before the battle as they relax, chat, visit prostitutes, and gripe about their lives in the military. It becomes clear that they have been deeply hurt by the anti-war sentiment back home in America, as they talk about going home to the hatred of many, even their wives and girlfriends. When the battle starts on May 10, they are quickly swept into ten days of sheer horror. The North Vietnamese hold the top of the hill, and are well entrenched with fresh reserves of ammunition. They inflict heavy casualties on the Americans, who doggedly press on in their quest to secure the hill, giving viewers a trenchant view of war at its worst.moreless
