1996
Rating:
PG-13
This rendition of of William Shakespeare's Hamlet is a 4 hour feature masterpiece by actor/ director Kenneth Branagh. It has an all-star cast, featuring Branagh himself as Hamlet, Kate Winslet as Ophelia, Billy Crystal as the Gravedigger, Robin Williams as courtier Osric, and many many more. This version is the only film depicting the brilliant and dark play in it's original entirety, including the storyline of Norwgian prince Fortinbras, who takes over the Danish thrown after the bloody demise of the entire royal family at the end of the play. Branagh's only dramatic license with the film was the setting. He staged the story in Victorian times instead of Shakespeare's own Elizabethan. The story centers around the Danish prince Hamlet, who returns from school only to find his father has been murdered and his mother has remarried the slain king's brother, who, consequently, Hamlet suspects is the murderer. Driven mad by his suspicions and the ghost of his murdered father, Hamlet devises a dark plot to prove his uncle a murderer and take his vengeance. The film received four Oscar nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Branagh.moreless
