Hamlet 2 is 2008 film of a high school drama teacher's attempt to stage a sequel to the Shakespeare classic. Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan) had once attempted to become a star, but his dreams of being a professional actor were never realized. After battling alcoholism, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, and got a job teaching high school drama. The school system has had numerous budget cuts, and, because there are no other arts electives available, Dana finds himself facing a large number of new students, most of whom are not interested in the theater. More bad news is dropped on him when he learns his drama program will be cut at the end of the term. Dana hopes a Hamlet production will help to inspire his students and save his program. He writes and produces an original play using time travel to avoid the deaths of the characters of Shakespeare's original, and adding new, controversial content, such as introducing Jesus Christ with a song and dance called "Rock Me Sexy Jesus."moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 50

The New York Times Stephen Holden

It all adds up to the kind of bad family entertainment likely to raise only a few eyebrows.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

It's an unhinged, off-the-wall comedy that will try anything once, an uneven film in which the hits are so dead-on that the misses don't seem to matter.

  • 50

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Amusing but unevenly inspired tale of a deluded high school drama teacher's attempt to stage a career-saving extravaganza has some laughs, to be sure.
