Movie Summary

Director:
Peter Hyams
Released:
1979
Rating:
PG
Hanover Street portrays a World War II love triangle between an American pilot, a British nurse and an intelligence officer. Lt. David Halloran (Harrison Ford) takes shelter during an air raid in London and meets Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down). David and Margaret share an immediate connection that is intense, but not entirely honest. Margaret has a husband, Paul (Christopher Plummer), whose role as a British Intelligence officer requires the utmost secrecy. Margaret skirts the truth and the lovers begin an affair. David must fly behind enemy lines for a dangerous mission and asks Margaret to meet with him after its completion in two weeks. Margaret agrees. David's special assignment involves transporting "secret cargo," a spy, into France. During the course of the flight, David realizes Paul is Margaret's husband but they come under enemy attack and the plane crashes. The two men must make their way to safety and complete the mission. Peter Hyams ("Outland") directs this 1979 romantic drama.

    Variety

Hanover Street is reasonably effective as a war film with a love story background. Unfortunately it's meant to be a love story set against a war background.

Gung-ho American World War II bomber pilot falls for an already married English rose during teatime rendezvous in war-torn Hanover Street. Anaemic and foolish.
