Hansel and Gretel is a 1987 musical based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale and directed by Len Talan. Young Hansel (Hugh Pollard) and his sister Gretel (Nicola Stapleton) are destitute but optimistic. They live with their father (David Morton) and stepmother (Emily Richard) in a humble cottage in the deep forest. One day, however, a dark cloud passes over their lives. Their stepmother is driven to hysteria by the lack of food and worries constantly about the family's resources. She hatches a desperate ploy: to leave the children in the forest to make their own way in life. Although Hansel and Gretel are terrified, they work together to encourage each other and try to find a way back home. Starving, they think their dreams have come true when they stumble across a whimsical house constructed entirely from baked goods and candy. However, Griselda (Cloris Leachman), the owner of the house, has some dark plans of her own.
