Happiness

Movie Summary

Director:
Todd Solondz
Released:
1998
Rating:
R
Happiness is a bleak comedy about the secret lives of three sisters and the people around them. Tricia (Cynthia Stevenson) is the oldest of the sisters, and she appears to be living an idyllic life in the suburbs. What she doesn't know, however, is that her psychiatrist husband Bill (Dylan Baker) is secretly a pedophile. The middle sister, Helen (Lara Flynn Boyle) is a successful writer whose only thrill in life is the strange affair that she is carrying on with Allen (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a man who constantly makes obscene phone calls to her house. The youngest sister, Joy (Jane Adams) can't seem to do anything right in her life. Despite going on numerous dates, she can never seem to connect with anyone and is constantly abused by those she trusts. As their lives spiral into various levels of depression, sorrow and danger, each sister begins to question if there really is anything good in their lives to hold onto. Happiness explores the very notion of what "happiness" really means.moreless

Solondz's filmmaking style tries to make a virtue out of flatness and distance, and is always more comfortable indicating where feelings would go than actually providing them.
