Happy Birthday, Gemini

Movie Summary

Rating:
R
Happy Birthday, Gemini mixes comedy with emotional tenderness in this story of a young man coming out in the early 1970s. In an ethnically diverse south Philadelphia neighborhood, there lives a colorful and diverse group of characters. There's the funny Irish sexpot, Bunny Weinberger (Madeline Kahn, "Young Frankenstein"), the loud Italian widow, Lucille Pompi (Rita Moreno,"West Side Story") and the family of young Francis Geminiani (Alan Rosenberg). Francis dates Judith (Sarah Holcomb), but he really only has eyes for her brother, Randy (David Marshall Grant). Frances must find a way to let his family know his true self, before the nosy neighbors reveal his secret. Based on the hit play "Gemini" by Albert Innaurato, this 1980 film was one of the first to focus on the emotional complexity of sexual identity. Director Richard Benner treats the difficult topic with heartfelt sincerity but throws in enough comic silliness from his leading ladies to keep the movie moving.
