Happy Hoboes, also known as Two Pieces of Bread, is an Italian film from 1979. It follows the exploits of troubadours Pippo Mifa (Vittorio Gassman) and Peppe Dore (Philippe Noiret). While sharing a jail cell, they discover they once loved the same woman, Lucia (Anna Melato). When they get out of jail, the two travel to see Lucia, but she has passed away leaving one child behind, Piripicchio (Alessandro La Torre). Pippo and Peppe learn that one of them is the father. Not knowing who is legally responsible for the child, the musicians fight over who will bring him up. However, they realize the foolishness of this fight and choose to raise him together. The film depicts the two men teaching Piripicchio their ways as wandering musicians. As he grows from a cute toddler to an insolent young man, Piripicchio begins to resent his fathers' lifestyle. Happy Hoboes is a funny and often melancholy look at family and obligation.moreless
