Hard Luck is a 2001 low-budget drama about a mental patient, Lucky O'Donnell (Kirk Harris), three months short of his release from an Oregon state mental hospital. Lucky was found not guilty of murder for reasons of insanity and is near the end of serving a seven-year term. Ex-wife and childhood friend Sheryl (Renee Humphrey) pays him a visit him one day and informs him that her brother Eric, once Lucky's best friend, is dying of leukemia and in the hospital. Devastated, Lucky decides that he will break out of the institution and take Sheryl and Eric to the island where they spent their summers as children. Reluctantly, Sheryl goes along with the plan and Lucky is able to escape the hospital with little trouble. Hot on their heels, though, is Sheryl's father and brother, both police officers. Hard Luck is directed by Jack Rubio, from a screenplay by star Kirk Harris.
