Harold and Maude is a 1971 comedy directed by Hal Ashby. Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is obsessed with death to the point of attending multiple funerals, using a hearse as his main mode of transportation, and staging fake suicides. At one of his funeral visits, Harold meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), an elderly woman who also attends random funerals. In contrast to Harold, Maude has a very positive outlook on life and the two become friends. Maude begins to show Harold that life can be beautiful. Harold starts to play the banjo and have a generally better view of the world. Harold's mother tries to find him a wife, but Harold ends up scaring them all away. Harold then shares his intent to marry Maude and his family does not approve. Harold and Maude share a dance during Maude's 80th birthday party where she reveals to Harold that she will die at midnight. Harold must now face the death of the only person that ever got him to recognize the beauty of life.moreless
