Movie Summary

Director:
Paul Mazursky
Released:
1974
Rating:
R
Harry and Tonto follows the story of Harry Coombes (Art Carney) and his cat Tonto on a road trip across 1970s America. Harry, an elderly widower, is forced to leave Manhattan when his apartment block is torn down. He initially moves in with his eldest son (Philip Burns), but senses that the family already have enough problems of their own. Accompanied by his faithful cat, Harry sets out for Los Angeles, paying a visit to both of his other grown-up children (Ellen Burstyn and Larry Hagman) along the way. The journey brings him into contact with a host of oddball characters, including teenage runaway Ginger (Melanie Mayron) and a hitch-hiking religious healer (Michael Butler). An uplifting comedy focusing on the subject of aging, the film sees Harry gradually freeing himself from his past and learning to see each day as a new beginning. Carney puts in a strong performance as Harry, for which he was awarded the 1974 Best Actor Academy Award.moreless
