Hawks, a comedic drama from 1988, is a dark yet funny story. The film centers around two terminally ill cancer patients, Bancroft (Timothy Dalton) and "Decker" Deckermensky (Anthony Edwards) who meet in a British hospital. Decker, a former American football player, has resigned himself to his fate and even contemplates suicide, but is dissuaded by Bancroft. The two hatch a plan to escape the boredom of the hospital and live their final days to the fullest. To achieve this, they take off from the hospital in a stolen ambulance, determined to have one last good memory before the end by visiting an Amsterdam brothel. However, when they come across two British women along the way, Hazel (Janet McTeer) and Maureen (Camille Coduri), their plans change as romance ensues. The men try to hide their illnesses from the women, but one of the women hides a terrible secret of her own. While it certainly deals with some delicate issues, Hawks features a finely balanced adventure between humor and poignancy.moreless
