Heart of the Rio Grande is a heartwarming story about the power of friendship and the love of family. After running away from her teacher, spoiled rich girl Connie, (Edith Fellows) pleads unsuccessfully with her business tycoon father not to send her to Smoke River Dude Ranch for the summer. Before even reaching the ranch, Connie begins to cause trouble by staying aboard the train she arrived on and hoping that no one notices her absence. After a quick rescue by ranch foreman Gene Autry (playing himself), she finally arrives at the ranch and meets the former foreman, Hap Callahan (William Haade). It quickly becomes clear that Autry and Callahan have a longstanding disagreement over the running of the ranch. After a series of attention-seeking incidents, some of them dangerous, Connie alleges abuse at Gene's hands and sends falsified photographs to her father as "proof" of the abuse. He immediately leaves his business dealings and travels to the ranch to retrieve his daughter, but what he finds when he arrives at Smoke River Dude Ranch was not at all what he expected.moreless
