Heartburn takes a comical look at the complexity of marriage through the story of screenwriter Nora Ephron's (When Harry Met Sally) own union to journalist Carl Bernstein ("All the President's Men"). Food writer Rachel Samstat (Meryl Streep) falls in love with newspaper columnist Mark Forman (Jack Nicholson) at a friend's wedding. She gives up her New York life to join him in Washington DC. A marriage, a house and children quickly follow, but happily ever after is not part of the package. While swollen with her second pregnancy, Rachel discovers Mark has having an affair with one of her friends. The couple sways between breaking up and staying together, providing plenty of opportunities for Streep and Nicholson to magnificently enact a battle of the sexes. Mike Nichols (The Graduate) directs this wise and funny 1986 comedy about relationships, with an all-star supporting cast including Kevin Spacey, Jeff Daniels, Catherine O' Hara and Stockard Channing.
