Heater is a 1999 Canadian drama film, written and directed by Terrance Odette and starring Gary Farmer, Stephen Ouimette, and Mauralea Austin in a revealing eighty-five minute film about homelessness and the never-ending struggle for survival. In Heater, two homeless men find themselves caught in a cold winter night with no shelter, no food, and little hope. Inspiration strikes and the men decide to steal, and then return, a heater in order to receive the refund money. When their plot fails, however, as the store will not take back the heater without the receipt of purchase, they must come up with other ways to make it through the night. Though the plot is simple and the film will not satisfy those seeking over-the-top action and larger than life storylines, Heater's simplicity, and honesty in consideration of the plight of the homeless men, is moving. Gritty and minamalist, Heater was screened at the 1999 Vancouver Film Festival.
