Heathers is a dark comedy about murder, love and revenge in a suburban high school. As Heathers opens, Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) is regretting her friendship with three of the most popular girls in school, all named Heather. She longs to return to her old friends but fears the wrath of the Heathers. One day, a ray of hope arrives in the person of J.D. (Christian Slater), who is either a dashing hero or a murderous psychopath. Once Veronica confesses to J.D. her desire to get rid of the Heathers, he begins to make good on her wishes and starts killing them. When two cruel jocks start spreading vicious rumors about Veronica, J.D. turns a gun on them, too. By the time that Veronica realizes that J.D. is, in fact, insane it is almost too late. He has planned to blow up the entire school and make it look like a mass suicide. Will Veronica find a way to stop him before he follows through on his nefarious plan?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Variety

Daniel Waters' enormously clever screenplay blazes a trail of originality through the dead wood of the teen-comedy genre.

  • 70

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

As snappy and assured as it is mean-spirited. Its originality extends well beyond the limits of ordinary high school histrionics and into the realm of the genuinely perverse.

  • 63

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

What sets Heathers apart from less intelligent teenage movies is that it has a point of view toward this subject matter - a bleak, macabre and bitingly satirical one.
