Heavy Metal In Baghdad depicts the story of a Acrassicauda, a heavy metal band formed in Iraq by five young Iraqi men in 2001. Acrassicauda, which means black scorpion, derived their inspiration from American metal bands such as Metallica, Slayer and Slipknot. They managed to write their own songs and performed a couple of concerts just before the war erupted in 2003, and started destroying their dreams. The restrictions of warfare took a toll on their way of life. Eventually places to play started to become scarce. Finally the band had to flee Iraq due to the persecution by religious groups that deemed the music they played as being satanic. They travelled to Damascus, Syria where they lived for one year as refugees. Still trying to keep their dream of a heavy metal band alive, they are currently residing in Turkey, where they live off donations and receive support from their fans.
