Heavy Traffic is a 1973 animated film that was written and directed by the legendary Ralph Bakshi. The film is animated but book-ended by short live action segments. The film follows the strange and surreal fantasies of Michael Corleone, a young cartoonist living in New York City. The animation uses pinball machine imagery to represent the chaos of life in the inner city. Michael lives with his oafish and two timing Italian father and neurotic, ditzy Jewish mother. He attempts to escape the rough and ugly inner city world by satirizing its crazed characters in his cartoons. His friends who run with violent gangs and the Italian Mafia, look down on Michael and ridicule him but he keeps making comics. He then gets a chance to pitch a film idea to a movie producer. His idea proves to be too wild for the movie producer, as it's about Earth in the future after it's been destroyed by pollution and war. In this wasteland a mutant hero challenges and then kills God. Heavy Traffic got an X rating but got positive reviews and was Bakshi's biggest critical success.moreless
