Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the 2001 film based on the off-Broadway musical of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell stars as Hedwig in the film that he co-wrote and directed. When German glam-rocker Hansel Schmidt falls in love and decides to leave communist East Germany, he realizes he must get a sex change in order to marry the man of his dreams and move to America. When the operation goes awry, Schmidt adopts the name Hedwig and moves to America with his husband, singing about the "angry inch" that the operation left him with. When Hedwig's husband leaves her, she meets Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt) and the two write music together. When Gnosis becomes famous, Hedwig laments the loss of her love. In the final part of the film, Hedwig and Gnosis reunite with a climactic and heart-breaking rendition of the first song they wrote together. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Hedwig and the Angry Inch won the Best Director and Audience Awards.moreless
