Hell on Wheels is the first film about professional bike racing and cycling's defining contest - the Tour de France. The Tour de France is held annually in France and nearby countries. The race covers more than 3,600 kilometers (2,200 miles) over three weeks. This spectacular event fascinates millions of people worldwide with its combination of beautiful French countryside and the tensions of the race. The film documents the 100th anniversary of the race in 2003 from the perspective of the German Team Telekom. Academy Award-winning Director Pepe Danquart captures the torture, pain, fear and courage of the riders. The film also has a personal quality due to the 11-year history of German teammates Eric Zabel and Rolf Aldag. The film goes beyond the riders, though, to the masseurs, managers and fans. Also featured are the sport's top riders including Lance Armstrong, Eric Zabel, Jan Ullrich, Tyler Hamilton, Alexandre Vinokurov, Andreas Kloden and others.
