Tony Randel
Released:
1988
Rating:
R
Hellbound: Hellraiser II is the second installment in the gory, sadistic "Hellraiser" series of horror films, based on the short stories of Clive Barker. Taking up where the first film ended, protagonist Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) has been committed to an insane asylum following the gruesome deaths of her entire family. Kirsty is miserable in the asylum, but believes that she is safe from the malevolent Pinhead and his repulsive associates, the Cenobites. However, the asylum's director, Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) is fixated on occult phenomena and is determined to unlock the secrets of the "puzzle box": an intricately carved box that, unbeknownst to him, opens a gateway to Hell. When Channard finally opens the box, Pinhead and the Cenobites are once again able to enter the human dimension. Kirsty soon learns that they have no intention of leaving without a fight. To save her own soul, Kirsty must face her fears and find a way to send Pinhead back to Hell empty-handed. Hellbound: Hellraiser II is a favorite of gore aficionados throughout the world because of its realistic-looking practical effects and many unusually inventive kill scenes.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    IGN

Hellbound is gorier, larger, and more accessible than the first. It rehashes the original at the outset so people can grasp it whether or not they'd seen the first and as a result ...

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Jay Scott

Clive Barker is not without a sense of humor. And he's certainly not without a sense of what will scare his audiences senseless. [28 Dec 1988]

  • 50

    Chicago Tribune Dave Kehr

Hellbound offers a consistent, low-level queasiness, an effect more of revulsion than horror. It's nothing that a good shot of Pepto-Bismol wouldn't take care of.
