Movie Summary

Guillermo del Toro

Hellboy is a large red demon who was brought to Earth by the Nazis while he was still an infant. Soon thereafter he was rescued by Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, an occult expert who raised him as his beloved son and taught him to love good and despise darkness. The adult Hellboy cuts an imposing figure: he's almost seven feet tall and must constantly file down his horns so they don't impale his closest friends. Now, the benevolent, self-deprecating demon fights the powers of evil as a member of the government's Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. His colleagues at the Bureau include his pyro-telekinetic girlfriend Liz and the amphibious, web-fingered Abe Sapien. Together, the "freaks" must defeat the ancient, evil Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, the twisted and long-lived monk who helped the Nazis bring Hellboy to Earth over sixty years ago.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Mr. del Toro lets loose with an all-American, vaudevillian rambunctiousness that makes the movie daffy, loose and lovable.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Manohla Dargis

An enjoyable if somewhat neutered defender of the free world. Make no mistake: Hellboy still has a hide as hard-boiled as Lee Marvin in "The Dirty Dozen," but now he's also wearing...

    Variety Joe Leydon

Has more than enough across-the-board appeal to attract mainstream auds unfamiliar with source material.
