Helvetica is a documentary about graphic design and typography, particularly as it relates to the noteworthy font of the same name. The film opens with the introduction of the Helvetica font in 1957 and follows it up through its fiftieth anniversary in 2007. Despite being one of the most popular fonts in the world, there is a surprising amount of controversy regarding its ubiquity in the typeface world. While the film is nominally about the creation and endurance of the font, it is really an exploration of the people behind the creation and propagation of it. The film interviews dozens of people who, while unknown to the general public, are legends in the fields of design and font creation. Of particular note are Italian designer Massimo Vignelli, British journalist Rick Poynor, Dutch typographer Wim Crouwel and American type designer Matthew Carter. Despite its somewhat esoteric subject, Helvetica is proof that the only requirement for making a good film is finding a compelling story.moreless
