Henry V is a 1944 film adaptation of the classic play by William Shakespeare from one of the greatest stars of the stage and screen, Laurence Olivier, who wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the film. The film, like the play, portrays Henry V's conquest of France in his effort to claim the throne he believed to rightfully belong to England. Henry V, played by Olivier, is a strong-willed and noble leader of men. His calculated decisions lead to great victories for England in their European campaign. While the events of Henry V take place in distant history, the film is significant for the timing of its release during World War II. Winston Churchill asked Olivier to make the film suitable for the British troops fighting abroad, in an effort to boost morale in what would become the final years for World War II. The film was created and released during the Allied force's storming of Normandy and initial push into German-occupied France. Henry V remains an inspiring film to this day, and won Olivier an Academy Award for his work in bringing the classic play to the screen.moreless
