1992
Rating:
PG-13
Hero is a 1992 comedy-drama starring Dustin Hoffman as Bernie LaPlante, a man who makes his living by pick-pocketing and committing other petty crimes. He’s frowned upon by mainstream society and doesn’t have much faith in himself, either. A brighter side of Bernie appears when he heroically rescues some survivors of a horrific plane crash, risking his life to save theirs. He disappears from the scene, but the media is ravenous to uncover the hero. Since Bernie refuses to step up, a homeless Vietnam veteran steps up and takes the credit. Bernie has to decide if it’s worth trying to convince everyone he’s not the deplorable social leech he appears to be, or if the world is better off with a war veteran as its hero. Hero is directed by Stephen Frears and co-stars Geena Davis as crash survivor and TV reporter Gale Gayley, and Andy Garcia plays the hard-luck Vietnam veteran John Bubber.
