Hideous Kinky is the film about a woman, Julia (Kate Winslet), who leaves London in the 1960's, along with her two young daughters Bea (Bella Riza), and Lucy (Carrie Mullen), to live in Morrocco. The film is based upon the 1992 autobiographical novel by Esther Freud. Julia is a free-thinking hippy looking for excitement, spirituality and adventure. Bored with the misery and drudgery of her London lifestyle, she feels that this move will fulfill what is missing in her life. Once in Marrakech, Morocco, she and her daughters are faced with the harsh realities of unfriendly people, culture shock, and poverty. Longing for what they left behind in London, and the difficult adjustment to the Moroccan lifestyle, Bea and Lucy soon rebel. Julia meets a young con man Bilal (Said Taghmaoui), who becomes a very inspirational person in her life. Bilal's kindness and understanding helps bring harmony to the fractured family.
