High and Low is a 1963 crime thriller about a wealthy businessman who is blackmailed by a group of kidnappers. Kingo Gondo (Toshiro Mifune) is struggling to take control of his company, National Shoes, and has mortgaged everything he has in order to purchase a controlling interest in it. Things go awry, however, when a group of kidnappers calls him and tells him that they have taken his son. Shortly thereafter, however, Kingo's son walks into the house and everyone realizes that the boy who was kidnapped is actually the son of Kingo's chauffeur. While Kingo was willing to pay the ransom for his own son, he is hesitant to pay the ransom for the other boy since it will mean giving up on his dream of controlling National Shoes. He eventually agrees to pay it, and his chauffeur's son is ultimately found safe. Although this would appear to be the end of the story, it is actually just the beginning as Kingo struggles to hold onto his livelihood and discover the true identity of the kidnappers.moreless
