High Spirits is a 1988 comedy with a supernatural twist. Peter Plunkett (Peter O'Toole) is the proud owner of a rather dilapidated castle built on the Irish countryside. The castle is run as a bed-and-breakfast, and many of the locals work for Peter, turning the castle into an essential part of the community. But the castle is not doing well lately, and Peter is behind in his payments. Knowing how much American tourists enjoy the supernatural, Peter has a stroke of genius and advertises that the castle is filled with Irish ghosts. The rest of the staff is happy to play along and for a while it seems that the ruse is working. But one American tourist, Jack (Steve Guttenburg), encounters an actual ghost, Mary Plunkett (Darryl Hannah). Rather than fleeing, Jack begins to develop romantic feelings for Mary. This doesn't go over well with Steve's pill-popping wife Sharon (Beverly D'Angelo), until she encounters an attractive ghost named Martin (Liam Neeson). The complicated supernatural romance has plenty of hilarious surprises.moreless
