High Tide is a 1987 Australian film directed by Gillian Armstrong and starring Judy Davis, Jan Adele, and Claudia Karvan. When Lillie (Davis) is fired from her gig as a back-up singer for an Elvis impersonator, she is left in a small beach town on the coast of New South Wales. Unbeknownst to Lillie, she encounters her daughter Ally (Karvan), whom she had given to her mother-in-law Bet (Adele) many years ago when she was a baby. Ally and Lillie are fast friends and eventually Lillie learns of their relationship. While she is madly devoted to her daughter, Lillie is afraid of motherhood. Bet, however, is hardly the mother that Lillie had hoped she'd be. Hardly in tune with Ally's introspective nature, Ally retreats to the beach to spend her days surfing. Lillie must then make a decision as to how she can be present in her daughter's life without running away in fear. High Tide was nominated for seven Awards from the Australian Film Institute.moreless
