Himalaya is a movie about a rebellious young man named Karma (Gurgon Kyap) and old chief named Tinle (Thilen Lhondup). Aging Chief Tinle tries to retain his power over the Tibetan village in his final years. However, the young Karma desires Tinle's position, even though Tinle has his own son that will assume the title next. When Tinle's son mysteriously dies returning from the Tibet Lakes, Karma takes the title of chief without the blessing from Tinle. This splits the village into two factions for the upcoming yak caravan. The two men each lead their own caravan through the Himalayas on separate paths. As the two groups are on the same path, they eventually butt heads high up on the Himalaya mountains. Will the two men work out their problems or will violence break out upon the village? Eric Valli directs this 1999 shivering tale that received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film.
