Movie Summary

His Girl Friday, released on January 11, 1940, was director Howard twenty-fifth motion picture, and continued his advancement into the screwball comedy genre. Starring Cary Grant as Walter Burns and Rosalind Russell as Hildegard Johnson, the film centers around Walter's attempt to pry his ex-wife away from her pending nuptials to a boring insurance salesman. Key to Walter's plan is enticing Hildy to cover one last story for her former newspaper, the upcoming execution of convicted murder Earl Williams. Originally planned as a remake of The Front Page, Hawks decided to ditch using two male leads as The Front Page had done, instead he chose to cast a female lead opposite of Cary Grant upon hearing his secretary read Hildy Johnson's role. Though Rosalind Russell was nowhere near the top of the list for the part, thanks to lack of interest from other lead actress she was given the role, and the rest is film history. Placed at number nineteen on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list, His Girl Friday is classic comedy in every sense of the word and still brings the laughs to this day.moreless
