Hitch Hike Lady is the comedic chronicle of Ms. Amelia Blake (Alison Skipworth), a stoic British housewife who comes to America to visit her son, Alfred, under the mistaken impression that he's become a wild business success. Culturally clueless but relentlessly cheerful about her prospects, Amelia is determined to hitch-hike her way to a reunion with Alfred in California. With her new friend Judy Martin (Mae Clarke) at her side, the two women make their way to the West Coast, helped by a series of charmingly odd strangers and a friendly fellow adventurer named Jimmy (James Ellison). Along the road they are embroiled in a series of entertaining scenarios, but the real trouble comes when Jimmy and Judy discover that Amelia's son is far from being an affluent, respectable businessman, and decide to spare her the pain of disappointment. Light-hearted fun and a few surprising moments of poignancy rule in this Depression-era film from Republic Pictures.
