Hobson's Choice is a 1954 comedy about a Victorian father trying to keep his daughters from marriage. Henry Hobson (Charles Laughton) owns a boot shop in Victorian England but spends more of his time in the local pub than running his business. He decrees that his daughter, Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), will not marry to save him the expense of a dowry. He also relies on her good sense and business abilities to keep the shop going. The rebellious Maggie quickly makes an arrangement with his best worker, bootsmith Will Mossop (John Mills), to marry her and establish a competing shop. Although the marriage begins as a practical arrangement, Will and Maggie soon find themselves establishing a genuine affection. Maggie then decides to help her younger sisters, Alice (Daphne Anderson) and Vicky (Prunella Scales), also find some happiness far from their father's demands. Meanwhile, the outraged Henry tries to quell the feminine revolt in his own home. David Lean directs this family comedy.moreless
