Holy Smoke tells the story of Ruth Barron (Oscar winner Kate Winslet) who has gone to India who has found a spiritual awakening while following guru Baba. Her parents, learning Ruth has changed her name to Nanzi, are appalled by this turn of events. Trying to help her, they coax her back to Australia by telling her that her father, Gilbert (Tim Robertson), has had a stroke. Upon her arrival home, she learns that she has been tricked into returning so she can be "deprogrammed" by guru PJ Waters (Harvey Keitel). PJ thinks of himself as a hotshot who can deprogram anyone and win them over to his beliefs. However, Ruth proves to be more than a match for his skills as she begins to win him over to her way of doing things. Director Jane Campion's Holy Smoke explores the nature of identity and belief in this sexy, independent film.

    The New York Times

As Holy Smoke moves from its early mix of rapture and humor into this more serious, confrontational stage, it runs into trouble.
